Before even having finished the book I'd already recommended it to all of my closest musician friends. Honestly, there were times when I felt like reading this book was "cheating"- like looking in the back of the math book for the answers- because virtually every other paragraph had me going "wow, it would've taken me years of mistakes to figure that out," or "damn, of course, that's so obvious", etc. The book provides a very specific step-by-step on everything from designing killer social media profiles to synch licensing, to how-to-kill-a-tour, so on and so forth, and it does it all incredibly well. I've read a few books on the music industry, but none was an easier read- it's witty and funny and entertaining while still being packed with hardcore, pertinent info from cover to cover- and it never feels like the author is "talking down" to you, as some of the books written by MU industry execs/lawyers often do. It really just feels like one musician doing his genuine best to help as many others as possible, and I couldn't be happier I picked it up.
Ari - where were you years ago when I needed you? I love Ari's no BS style, his depth of wisdom on the topic, his sense of humor and his overall logical approach to the subject. I believe this will help me to actually move to the next level in my musical endeavors. If you are interested in this topic, this is a must-read.

This is absolutely THE BEST book out there (at the time of this review) on how to make a great living in the new music business. Being a 6-figure musician myself for the last 5 years, I can personally attest that this great resource assumes that you work hard, have sufficient talent, work really hard, and follow the directions provided in such great detail in this comprehensive music career guide. And did I mention that it’s hard work?Although you have to Do The Work, Ari shares so many excellent industry insights and creative ideas that you can *work hard* on what MATTERS to your music career, and not just spin your wheels. You will learn about everything from writing better songs to producing better recordings to branding your music to licensing/monetizing your music and more.I say this guide is comprehensive because Ari goes into great detail on all aspects of the music industry. Whether you are a seasoned pro or just beginning, this book can help you to achieve your dreams of being a successful, independent professional musician making a good living doing what you LOVE.Do yourself a favor and GET THIS BOOK and REALLY follow Ari’s great advice.An aside: I bought all three versions so I could listen to the audiobook while I run/exercise, use the eBook for it’s keyword search-ability, and have the hard copy to mark up like a Bible. I have NEVER bought all versions of any book. This book is THAT GOOD.
Outstanding and comprehensive book that is up-to-date as of early 2017. I've read plenty of other music business books that were released within the past year which don't even mention key subjects such as digital distributors and streaming royalties (which have fundamentally changed the game). Ari has an incredible depth of knowledge from hands-on experience in the industry and it really shows, he is able to explain practical details about booking shows, getting paid, signing contracts and everything else you'll encounter in this tricky business. This is the single best music business book I've read in a long time.The only negative (which I won't deduct a star) is that he constantly switches pronouns between "he" and "she" when referring to hypothetical situations. He refers to a producer as a "he" and then two lines later he starts using "she". It distracts you from the core message.
If you want to get somewhere with your music, this is a must-have! Most books give endless links to websites and such that went defunct before the book was even published. This one gives you the information to what you should look for instead. What also makes this book amazing is the way it is written. Not like a boring business management book, but like Ari was sitting down and actually talking to you. There's a lot of humor that comes with a lot of information on every subject you'd need to know (including a chapter on how to live as a musician in L.A., NYC, and Nashville), but in a way that doesn't make it boring.I highly recommend it to anyone that wants to do more than just play in their bedroom and move up in the wonderful world of music.
